Calendula is a beautiful flower with bright orange petals. It has its origins in India but it was successfully cultivated and it is certainly very appreciated in many European countries. Dried petals are helpful remedy in many internal and especially external ailments of the human body.
People used this plant for hundreds of years as herbal infusions, tinctures, ointments and as poultice for healing certain wounds. The plant has been scientifically studied in recent years and the benefits are real. Calendula has been introduced in many studies conducted in France by gastroenterologists that wanted to discover the truth about traditional remedies. The studies included real patients and the plant proved very useful in constipation, gastritis and ulcer. It can also relieve the painful spasms of the digestive system, reduce pain in ulcers and heal some lesions of the digestive tract.
But the most amazing qualities of calendula can be noticed when the ointment containing active substances from this plant is applied on the lesions of the skin. The skin lesions resulted from surgery followed by radiotherapy in cancer patients are healing significantly faster and are less painful. It is also helpful in reducing acne, bruised skin, minor burns and contusions.
The herbal infusion can be used as treatment in canker sore, periodontal inflammation and other lesions of the oral mucosa.
People used these remedies long before the pharmaceutical industry tested them and proved them useful. They are safe, cheap and easy to find and can help on so many levels that it is a pity that we are not using them more often.
