Alternative names : Rubus Idaeus, European Raspberry, Framboise, Framboisier Sauvage
Widely cultivated in temperate regions of the world, for its tasty and sweet berries, Red Raspberry belongs to the Rose family and is native to Europe (Turkey) and Northern Asia. As a wild plant, Red Raspberry grows in forests, in high altitude mountains. The scientific name of the plant is considered linked to the legend of Ida, the daughter of the king of Crete and one of the nymphs taking care of Zeus, who pricked her fingers on the Raspberry thorns, when trying to pick berries for Zeus, thus coloring the initially white berries, in red.
Medicinal properties of both Red Raspberry fruits and leaves have been known since centuries. Mainly used in enteritis, enterocolitis, and diarrhea, the leaves are also helpful in urinary tract conditions and respiratory problems. Having astringent and diuretic properties, Red Raspberry leaves are sometimes used as an antispasmic agent and uterine tonic. Popular remedies recommend Red Raspberry leaves for heavy periods, morning sickness in pregnancy, to prevent miscarriage and to ease labor and delivery, while recent studies show that a regular consumption of Red Raspberry fruits increases fertility, both in women and men.
The fruits have strong antioxidant effects, improve immunity and diminish the risk for cardiovascular disease and cancer. Some people use Red Raspberry fruits to burn fat and lose weight and for general detoxification. Highly recommended for diabetics, the berries are able to stabilize sugar levels and stimulate the pancreas.
The oil obtained from Red Raspberry seeds is a natural sun protection factor. In acne cases, a paste obtained from 5 to 7 mashed Red Raspberry leaves can be applied on the affected area for 15-20 minutes. For oily skin, a homemade mask with Red Raspberry fruits is an excellent remedy: blend 100 g of berry juice with 2 tablespoons of milk and apply on your face and neck for 15 min.
